Frantisek Svec, Ph. D.

E.O. Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory

The 2009 Dal Nogare Award recipient is Dr. Frantisek Svec.  Dr. Svec is the Facility Director of the Molecular Foundry at the E.O. Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory where he has been since 2005, as well as a Professor at the University of California, Berkeley from 1997.  He received his Ph.D. degree in Polymer Chemistry at the Institute of Chemical Technology, Prague in the Czech Republic in 1969, and then spent seven years on the faculty there as an Assistant Professor.  After a position as a visiting scientist at the University of Karlsruhe in Germany, Professor Svec returned to Czech Republic and was a Scientific Secretary and Technology Transfer Manager at the Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry, Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague.   He then joined the faculty at Cornell University in New York from 1992 to 1996 before assuming his current position at Berkeley.  His main research interests are in analytical and polymer chemistry.   Specifically in the development of new separation media in various shapes and formats for different modes of separations.  These include: porous polymer monoliths,  polymeric supports and catalysts, suspension, emulsion, and dispersion polymerization techniques,  mono-disperse beads,  porous materials, chemical modification of polymers and Micro-fluidic and capillary systems.
With over 350 publications, including 56 book chapters and review articles, 3 books and a separate list of 75 patents, Franc Svec has contributed to the deep level of understanding to separation processes.   In addition, Professor
Svec serves as the Editor in Chief of the Journal of Separation Sciences as well as serves on the Editorial Boards of Journal of Chromatography A, Electrophoresis, Chinese Journal of Chromatography, Macromolecular Materials and Engineering and Chemical Letters (Prague).  Dr. Svec is a past president and active member of the California Separation Science Society.  Recently, Svec received the following awards:

2005:    Journal of Chromatography Top Cited Article Award, M.J.E. Golay Award and Medal in Chromatography, EAS Award for Achievements in Separation Science, Honorary Doctorate in Philosophy, Umea University, Sweden

2008:    ACS Award in Chromatography
