The Pittcon 2012 Science Week program is happy to welcome Lee Marek who will present his educational and highly entertaining lecture demonstration, Weird Science on Fuels and Energy. Lee is a nationally recognized science demonstrator and educator from the University of Illinois at Chicago. The program will feature science education presented in a manner guaranteed to attract and hold the attention of the attendees a form of edutainment, if you will!
The Science Week Committee will host this informative and entertaining program for high school students during the Pittcon 2012 Conference and Exposition on Thursday morning, March 15, 2012 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida. The program is scheduled to run between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. The program is free to you and your students.
To sign up, complete registration form below. Space is limited and selection of schools will be on a first-come, first-served basis (provided the schools times of arrival and departure meet the schedule of the activity). Each school MUST have one adult chaperone per 20 students. The deadline for applications is February 10, 2012. Submitting an application does not guarantee your group a space in the program. A confirmation email will be sent by the end of February, 2012.
There is no charge to your school for this program. Limited funds are available for schools that require financial assistance to attend. If there are any expenses associated with this program that your school cannot meet, please submit a letter on school letterhead signed by the principal indicating the type and amount of assistance required.

LEE MAREK BIOGRAPHY
LEE MAREK teaches Chemistry 101 and presents chemical demonstrations and teacher programs at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). He taught AP & Honors Chemistry at Naperville North High School for nearly 30 years. His students have won numerous awards, including three of whom were chosen to be National Chemistry Olympiad participants and several for Intel (formerly Westinghouse) Science Projects. Lee has a BS in Chemical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign, a MST in physics and an MST in chemistry from Roosevelt University. He has completed additional course work at more than 20 colleges and universities. He has a strong interest in the History of Chemistry and has traveled extensively in Europe, studying the history of science. For the past 11 summers, he co-led a history of science programs in Europe.
Lee has assisted with more than 600 workshops/programs for teachers, students and the general public. He was the catalyst behind the Weird Science demonstration team, a small group of inspired teachers that toured the country inspiring other teachers, and has presented to over 300,000 teachers, students and the general public. Lee worked on science programs with Fermilab for over 20 years and was on the Friends of Fermilab board for 20 years.
Lee has received numerous awards including the Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching Science, Christa McAuliffe Fellow, American Chemical Societys James Bryant Conant Award, ACS Helen Free Award for Public Outreach, CMAs National Catalyst Award for Teaching Chemistry, Chemical Industries Council of Illinois Davidson Award, Sigma Xi Outstanding Teacher Award, Those Who Excel Award Illinois, Tandy Technology Scholar Award for Outstanding Teachers, Governors Master Teacher, Association of Science & Technology Centers Honor Roll of Teachers, Golden Apple Awardee and Chicago Section ACS Public Affairs Award. He was a Woodrow Wilson Chemistry Team leader for 10 years and a Flinn Chem Team Leader for 9 years. Marek was instrumental in founding CHEMWEST, a teachers alliance group of over 400 teachers in the Chicago area, and managed the association for 14 years. He has created videos, laser disks, DVDs, and some of the first streaming science videos on the web. He has also consulted for a number of other science related projects.
Lee is also become a regular (over 30 performances by either him or his students) on The David Letterman Show, and one of his segments was a finalist for an Emmy. He was highlighted on the 40th anniversary of the Bozo Show and a CBS news special, Education: Our Nations Toughest Assignment, and numerous regional and national television programs. He authored several kids science books and kits. Lee worked on several projects for Nobel Laureate Leon Lederman.
