Florida has become the powerful new catalyst in the global life sciences industry.

The state’s biotechnology, pharmaceutical and medical device sectors continue to grow, making Florida the epicenter of some of the most exciting research, promising discoveries, and successful commercialization efforts in the world.

Driven by its own strong life sciences assets and drawing in a number of leading research institutes from around the world, Florida is the new hub for life sciences.


  • Across Florida today, nearly 850 companies specialize in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, or medical devices and employ over 26,000 life science professionals.

  • Florida’s biotechnology employment between 2007 and 2009 nearly doubled and the number of Florida’s biotech establishments increased by 60% during the same time period.

  • Florida is home to world–renowned research institutes such as Max Planck Florida Institute, Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute, Scripps Florida, Torrey Pines Institute for Molecular Studies and Vaccine & Gene Therapy Institute (VGTI) Florida.

  • Additional Florida–based organizations: Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, , Cleveland Clinic Florida, H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute, Hussman Institute for Human Genomics, Jackson Memorial Medical Center, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Mayo Clinic, and Mount Sinai Medical Center.

  • Florida ranked among the top 10 states for bioscience patents between 2004–2009.

  • Florida has a number of new life science research parks including Florida Center for Innovation at Tradition (Port St. Lucie), Lake Nona Medical City (Orlando), and the University of Miami Life Science and Technology Park (Miami), – expanding upon a network of 7 existing research parks and 15 technology incubators including The Sid Martin Biotechnology Incubator (Gainesville).

  • Nearly 200 biotechnology companies, including Sanofi Pasteur VaxDesign Campus, Accentia/Biovest International, Bioheart and Applied Genetic Technologies Corporation.

  • Florida’s biotech areas of excellence:

  • Florida’s pharmaceutical cluster includes 150+ pharmaceutical companies and more than 5,400 professionals, including companies such as Bausch & Lomb Pharmaceuticals, Schering Plough, Actavis, Xcovery, Inc., Teva Pharmaceuticals and OPKO Health, Inc.

  • The Centers of Excellence Program is designed to bridge the gap between academia and industry and give university–produced innovations a push toward commercial viability. There are 11 such Centers at leading universities around the state including the Center of Excellence in Regenerative Health Biotechnology, Biomedical and Marine Biotechnology, Drug Discovery & Innovation, and in Nano–Bio Sensors.

  • Florida’s photonics cluster is among the largest in the United States, with some 270 companies focused on the design, development, manufacturing, testing, and integration of photonics and related systems.

  • Florida has world class industry research facilities, including the internationally recognized Center for Research and Education in Optics and Lasers (CREOL) at the College of Optics and Photonics at the University of Central Florida.
